Frontera builds software that helps labor unions recruit, retain, and service their members. One of our core beliefs is that working class Americans deserve the best possible representation to preserve their rights, protect their jobs, and improve their income. We support this belief by building the tools that labor organizations need to run their operations efficiently so they can provide the best possible service to their members.
In 2014 we were asked to build a mobile electronic member sign-up application that would enable union field reps to sign-up new members electronically on a tablet computer without the need for paper applications. That application was the vision of our first customer, UFCW Local 1000 in Dallas. And after we launched the first version of our flagship product, named EMMA by Ricky Burris, the President of Local 1000, we realized that labor unions everywhere were in need of modern technology to help them combat an increasingly hostile anti-labor environment.
So we set to work building improved versions of EMMA, adding sophisticated new features like advanced grievance processing, reporting and filtering capabilities, and a communication platform that enables EMMA to facilitate messaging between field reps and office staff. Our lead engineer, Ethan Kennedy, took the initial version of EMMA, built by Eric Wikman, and grew into into the modern, sophisticated platform that it is today.
In 2018 we built our first dues accounting system, fully integrated with the EMMA member servicing platform. This eliminated the need for two different systems and databases to run a union local. In 2019 we acquired Data Management Consultants, Inc., a Portland-based company with an existing dues accounting system that we really liked. One of DMC's co-founders, Rick Gustafson, joined the Frontera team, and we are now focused on making our dues accounting platform the best in the industry.
Whether we are building a member servicing platform or a dues accounting system, our software development is guided by one simple question: How can what we help unions serve their members better so that workers everywhere have the best possible opportunity for success?
